Dr.
B.L. Kapur Memorial Hospital occupies a unique position
in the Medical Scenario of the Ludhiana city, dedicated
to the service of the people. Dr. B.L. Kapur Memorial
Hospital, Ludhiana played a significant role particularly
in the Maternity and Child Care during the last
five decades.
Dr. B.L. Kapur, M.D. (Germany), started this hospital
at Lahore in 1930 as a small Nursing Home which
became later on a flourishing institution. It became
a recognized maternity hospital in Lahore especially
for the poor classes.
The partition of the country in 1947, forced Dr.
B.L. Kapur to leave Lahore and with the help of
Punjab Government, he started the Ludhiana Maternity
hospital which received public donations and Government
grants. The untiring efforts and fully devoted hard
work of Dr. B.L. Kapur lifted the hospital in to
a multi specialty institution. It started functioning
in Naulakha garden, Ludhiana on evacuee property
allotted the District authorities.
Later on finding that the building is inadequate
for hospital, the then chief. Minister, Dr. Gopi
Chand Bhargava was kind enough to allot a rehabilitation
measure, land known as Roshini Ground under the
Lahore Hospital Society Trust for the construction
of this charitable hospital.
A large number of displaced friends from Punjab
settled in Delhi requested Gynecologist to set up
a Maternity Hospital in Delhi.
The central Government was kind enough to allot
a land for this purpose and Dr. B.L. Kapur started
the hospital at Delhi in1959. The foundation stone
was laid by the Late Prime Minister Pandit Jawahar
Lal Nehru. Thus Lahore Hospital Society, a charitable
society, in a short period had set up two Maternity
Hospitals, one at Ludhiana and the second at Pusa
Road, New Delhi. Dr. B.L. Kapur Memorial Oration
which is delivered at the annual and biannual conference
of the Association and Delhi Medical Association
respectively.
In his professional work, Dr. B.L. Kapur attained
a high degree of efficiently and earned excellent
name and fame in his field of Gynecology and Family
Planning. He was also the editor of Journal of Obstetrics
and Gynecology which was earlier started at Lahore
in 1939. He worked actively in the field of Family
Planning and started training courses for Family
Planning workers, nurses and midwives. Dr. B.L.
Kapur was a very amiable and devoted Gynecologist
but was a strict disciplinarian as far as the care
and welfare of the patient was concerned.
After he left for the heavenly adobe in 1969, Ludhiana
Maternity Hospital in Ludhiana is largely catering
to the public of Punjab especially of Ludhiana in
all disciplines of medicine. The hospital is now
enriched by the departments like General Medicine,
Surgery, Pediatrics, Plastic Surgery, Orthopedic,
ENT, Neuro Surgery etc.
The hospital has got a separate Family Welfare and
Post Partum unit also. Our C contribution towards
Family Planning and Post Partum Programme has been
appreciated a number of times by the Government
and numerous shields, prizes and certificates have
been issued. The hospital has well equipped facilities
for all the investigation like Laboratory, Blood
Bank, E.C.G, Radiology, Colposcopy, Ultrasonography
& T.M.T. etc.
Educational Programme of this hospital was started
in the year 1947-48 with Auxiliary Nursing and Midwifery
course with a capacity of 60 students which later
on was converted to a multi purpose Health Workers
Training Course. The School of Nursing was upgraded
to the ‘A’ grade diploma Nursing programme
of general Nursing and Midwifery in the year 1993
with 5 promotional G.N.M. students and 35 general
students. It is a 3 year registered Diploma Programme,
under the Punjab Nurses Registration Council. From
1994 onwards, the school has been permitted to admit
students each year. With effect from 20006-07 batch,
this programme has been revised to 3 1/2 Years Diploma
Course.
The eminent and well known plastic Surgeon of India,
Dr. Wahigurupal Singh Sidhu (M.B.B.S., M.S. Surgery),
M.Ch. (Plastic Surgery) joined Dr. B.L. Kapur Memorial
Hospital in Dec.2005. He took as Medical Superintendent
and Head of the department of Surgery Plastic Surgery
& started Surgeries immediately the same day.
With devoted spirit and enthusiasm, he is encouraging
the nursing service especially the educational wing
of Dr. B.L. Kapur Memorial Hospital, with untiring
efforts. Born in Punjab but traveled abroad in so
many countries and having a lot of administrative
experience, his capacity and contribution for the
students well being is commendable.
Recently, The Board of Management of Dr. B.L. Kapur
Memorial Hospital Ludhiana has been reconstituted.
Besides eminent personalities like Mr. Baljit Kapur
and Mr. Dalbir K. Kapur, the following members have
